Arwyp’s brand new nurses graduated at a function held on 30 July 2010. The ceremony was led by Mrs. Adele Neethling, the vice-principal of the Arwyp Training Institute. Certificates and merit awards were handed to learners by the principal of
the Arwyp Training Institute, Mrs Helene Pieterse, and
the hospital CEO, Mr. Otto Wypkema. The motivational
speech for the day was given by ultra-marathon runner
Bruce Fordyce whose reputation added impact to
his ‘never-say-die message’ but who also had everyone
chuckling at his take on the fact that runners have to keep
going and can’t have a half-time like soccer players or break for tea like cricketers do.
At this year’s function, 120 certificates were awarded to learners who had successfully completed nursing programs during the previous year. These were received for the course leading to enrolment as a nursing auxiliary (R. 2176): 57 certificates; the course leading to enrolment as a nurse (R. 2175): 55 certificates; and the bridging course leading to registration as a nurse (R. 683): 16 certificates.
Seven merit awards for outstanding achievements were also awarded. Amongst the outstanding achievers was Ntombizodwa Sylvia Mahlangu, who achieved the second best examination results in the country in the SA Nursing Council final examination for the course leading to enrolment as a nurse in January 2010.
