Arwyp Medical Centre recently became the new sponsor for the Kempton Nite race which happens every year in January. This race, previously known as the Aston Pick n Pay Nite, is now known as the Arwyp Medical Centre 15 km Nite Race and took place on the 26th of January 2011.

The 15 km race followed the same route as in previous years with one exception (due to road closures that have taken place in the last year). The first 1000 finishers received a goody bag with their medal. Prize money was awarded to all category winners.

Runners and walkers turned up in their numbers to take part Traffic police ensured that the runners and walkers completed the course in safety by controlling the traffic on the relevant roads around the outside of the stadium. A cut-off time of 2 hours and 10 minutes was allocated and gold medals were given to the first 500 participants who finished the race and medals to 1200 other finishers. All 15km participants were given goodie bags and the school with the most entrants won a computer. A lot of attention was given to the fun run event. Family members of children were also able to represent their child’s school when entering. The aim for Arwyp is to get the community to start thinking and living a healthier life.

A trophy was also given to the fastest club bus which finished the race within 1 hour 45 minutes. Walkers were also allowed to partake. 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded in the open, veterans, masters, juniors, grand masters and walkers’ categories.

Race organisers held their collective breath as Gauteng had recently been awash with rain and although the whole of the previous week had been wet and rain had fallen for most of the day itself, the evening of the race brought perfect weather conditions. Competitors had to run on a rather marshy track when entering the Barnard Stadium but this small hindrance caused no more than slightly muddy running shoes and was nowhere near enough to dampen the enthusiasm of all who participated.
