Arwyp keeps pace with neurological world trends
International neurological learning centre held at Arwyp
Friday 10th and Saturday 11th June 2005 saw an international neurological learning centre being held in the auditorium at Arwyp Medical Centre. The aim of a learning centre is to teach the participants the technique of using a new product and giving those who had not yet used it, the confidence to do so. The product, the Porous Coated Motion Artificial Cervical Disc (PCM) which has been used in about 1 000 operations worldwide, is being introduced into South Africa by Orthomedics. The company had approached Arwyp neurosurgeon Dr. Thys Booyens to assist them in holding a learning centre to introduce the product to South Africans surgeons. World expert and one of the designers of the product, Brazillian Neurosurgeon Dr. Luiz Pimenta, flew to South African specifically to host the learning centre with Dr Booyens. Held over a two day period, the first day was spent on theory and case studies regarding the PCM with x-rays present for discussion. On the second day, the surgeons viewed a single-level cervical case done by Dr Pimenta and assisted by Dr Booyens and, via live coverage to the auditorium, were afforded the opportunity to hold a question and answer session while the operations were being carried out.

The 40 surgeons who attended the conference were from all over the country including Durban, Cape Town and Bloemfontein. Medical aid assessors also attended to assess and okay the product.
